Fishing businesses take a hit

(KION) The fishing industry is taking a hit. With many restaurants closing down and less fisherman out on the water, many fishing businesses are losing money.

Fishermen like Gaspar Catanzaro, with Monterey Fish Co., are doing what they can to keep the ‘hook’ attached to their customer base. “We are trying to keep our market full of fresh fish, daily fresh fish to keep our customers happy” says Catanzaro.

The Monterey Fish Co. makes some of their money in their shop, but the majority of their income comes from restaurants. Catanzaro says, “We only have about two drivers going out right now, the rest are at home.”

Many other fishing companies are struggling to keep employees during these times. The good news is, commercial fishing is considered an essential business. For non-commercial fisherman, it’s a different story, Moss Landing and Monterey have shut down their boat ramps while the stay at home order is in effect.

During these times, it’s important to remember to shop local. Catanzaro says, “If you go out once a week and order something from any restaurant, it helps them out. Support your local markets that are selling you know that is the way to do it.

The Monterey Fish Co. is in good faith that businesses will be restored, and will keep catching fish in the meantime.
