Doris Day’s Carmel Valley home for sale–all proceeds will go to animal charity

CARMEL, Calif. (KION)-- The home of late film icon, singer and animal activist Doris Day is on the market.

All proceeds from the sale of her 8.62 acre estate will go to the Doris Day Animal Foundation, which she founded in 1978. The property is being listed for $7.4 million.

The property has 12,400 square feet of net livable area, including a 7,535-square-foot main living area, plus an 847-square-foot second floor. There is also a 1,236-square-foot guest house, plus three “lofts” totaling 909 square feet, two caretaker units (1,041 and 713 square feet), as well as a caretaker’s office of 119 square feet. There’s also a 100-square foot enclosed “cattery”, where she kept a few of her of her cats; a large dog-care area, complete with its own kitchen; numerous walkways (where she walked her dogs); gardens, gatehouse, large living room with Carmel stone fireplace, a library, two offices, two guest bedrooms, a laundry, and numerous patios and decks.

The house also includes the spiral staircase that was featured in Day’s sitcom “The Doris Day Show,” which ran from 1968–1973.

In 1956 when Doris was working on the film “Julie” in Carmel, she fell in love with the area. It would be years later, when her animal rescue work was becoming difficult in Beverly Hills, that she decided Carmel would be the perfect place to continue her animal welfare work.

Day died on May 13th, 2019, at the age of 97, after complications from pneumonia, had a 20-year career in films, as well as a long career as a singer, recording 31 studio albums.

In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush for her achievements in the entertainment industry and for her work on behalf of animals. In his speech Bush said, “It was a good day for our fellow creatures when she gave her good heart to the cause of animal welfare. Doris Day is one of the greats, and America will always love its sweetheart.”
